Project 1 – Animation Studies : Creature creation.

For our project, aside from researching and scripting a conversation regarding three topics, we also are to create a two headed character who will be having the scripted discussion with itself. One head being pro-topic and the other being against it.

There was absolutely no shortage when it comes to two headed creatures, monsters, animals.  Not only does it turn out to be an actual mutation (Some beings, including humans are born with two headsand it’s an extremely rare type of parasitic twinning.)[1], but also has roots in folklore; Orthus the two-headed dog from Greek mythology, brother of the three headed dog and gate keeper, Cerebus. [2].

However, my creature already wrote part of its own description; it had to be able to have a discussion with itself, one that was intelligent enough to state some facts.

The two-headed monsters are often opposite of eachother regarding colour scheme, attributes and even personalities, this is something that I wanted to impliment within my creature aswell.

“Two personalities share the body of Cho’gall: Gall, cunning master of dark magics and forbidden incantations, and Cho, who’s never met a problem he couldn’t punch really, really hard.”[3]

Cho’gall (depicted above) is from the Blizzard World of Warcraft game, but also can be found in Heroes of the Storm and Hearthstone and the trading card game.  Where one (Cho)  is the brute, the other (Gall)  is the caster, splitting even their fighitng abilities up to one melee fighter and the other being a magic user.  As you can see in the picture, even with them sharing the same body, their heads and even own body’s side are different with attributes; Cho has two eyes and no horn, yet the protection needed for a fighter, where as Gall has a horn, one eye and no protection on his shoulder or even hand, due to his long range based attacks.

Terry and Terri are another example.  This time from the creators of Monster’s Inc and Monster’s University (this is where Terry and Terri take the stage), the cycloptic twins show another side of how I could create my character.   During the film when they introduce themselves, their personalities and differences are shown in a very short and easy introduction: “Hi.  I’m Terry with a ‘y’.  And I am Terri with an ‘i’, I’m a dance major!”  to which Terry follows up with ” And I am not.” Their design might not be as different as Cho’gall, but even with them being stuck to the same body, you can see clear differences. The way Terri seems much more energetic than Terry and this is emphasised by the bottle of soda in their hand whilst Terry is, almost calmly, holding a cup and sauser and ofcourse the horn count. Another thing that I found interested about this character is that their name can be gender bend, meaning they can be both male (Terence)  or female (Theresa). [4]

As a last example, I’m using Catdog from the Nickolodeon series “Cat-Dog”.

Their design is different from the ones earlier shown, this being because they don’t share the same ‘shoulders’ to have their heads on, instead they are the end of eachother’s body. A creation which is completely impossible, but made possible due to animation, a cat and a dog are now merged.  Not only are they two different personalities, two different levels of intellect (Cat being much smarter than Dog, yet lesser with social skills), but also two different animals.  By picking a cat and a dog, the creator has taken on two ‘household’ enemies and merged them together, which should give room for an interesting serie.

I have decided to choose the script regarding “Animation is for children.”.  With the character I want to create one who could be seen as age neutral.  And to achieve that I do think that (the ones above, aside from Cho’gall) they are close, if not completely, age neutral.
My character will be sharing two heads on his shoulders, rather than a catdog type of design, and I hope that with the colours I’ll be able to elevate the age level, and with that I mean to not go for bright, multi-colours, but rather a one colour-several shades, which might be darker in tone.
