Third Year: The dance.


In my final project the dance will be taking up most of the time. Here, I will put some research I’ve done that relates most to what I am looking for. I will also go a bit into why I’m more for one dance segment than the other. 

I already have something in mind for what I want to go for.
The dance between Sun and Moon is one that shows romance, adoration and a connection between the two.  What I am not looking for is an upbeat dance. What most dances lately show is one of lust, high pace and lots of.. popping. So I’ve mostly been looking at old films that have their dance routine.

I love the footwork and the fluidity of their movements. It’s soft, light and they regard each other with each and every movement.

Many of the old movie dances show this. It’s almost a conversation between the two characters, without words, only with their movements.

What I found most interesting in this piece is the use of silence.  The setting of the scene before their dance.  It creates a perfect form of intimacy which later on is picked up by their dance. The beat in which they dance picks up in pace and once they hold each other there is this fragile moment which for me finishes the scene perfectly.

Eventhough the Laendler is an Austrian folk dance, the movement, connection and fluidity of their motions and gestures are not to be disregarded.  The look that is given as their dance ends is also something I could use for Moon once they notice their time together is up.

This scene for La La Land I give as an example of a couple’s dance which has a different conversation than the ones before. It’s almost as if they want to up each other rather than that they are having a conversation of adoration or longing. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad scene or dance, but it isn’t the type of vibe I am looking for.

Moulin Rouge, one of my most favorite of films both visually and through conversation, shows through El Tango de Roxanne how words can narrate a dance.
As he tells the story, his movements show exactly the approach someone would have.  “First. There is.. desire.”  his movement becomes slow, dragging, eye contact.  They don’t touch each other whilst they twirl around one another. “Then. Passion.”  The sound of their hands meeting in a ‘high five’ gives the impact of how passionate it was/is, their movements (his hand dragging down her leg and hers grasping around the back of his neck) add to this. “Then. Suspicion!”  He grabs her and she starts to move away from him.  Their expressions empower the words and dance as he looks around with suspicion. “Jealousy! Anger! Betrayal!”  His hands on her are aggressive as he swings her back to have her eyes on only him, but she fails to do so.  All that follows as he interacts with her is aggressive, disappointed, frustrated.  He can not even look at her before he releases her wrist, which he clearly hurt, to then walk away from her.  The music, mainly the violin is a great addition to it all.  It almost cries out as the dance (and story) builds up.

Within Eclipse there won’t be emotions such as these, but it is an interesting piece to see as the music, storytelling and dance intertwine with each other in a perfect way to explain what I mean with this thing that I am looking for.
